Middlesex County is located in north central Massachusetts.  It borders Worcester County to the west, Essex County to the east and Norfolk County to the south.  Middlesex has two county seats, Cambridge and Lowell.  According to the latest census estimates, Middles County had a population of 1,467,016 making it the most populated county in Massachusetts.  As with most counties in Massachusetts, Middlesex has no formal county government and exist mainly as a geographic region.         


The cost of living in Middlesex is 32.35% higher than the National average however, the county also spends considerably more than the national average in education ($7,735 per pupil in Middlesex versus $6,058 per pupil, U.S. average).  Middlesex County residents value education and this is evident when you look at the number of high school and college graduates who live here.  Eighty-nine percent of Middlesex residents are high school graduates, 6% have 2-year College Degrees, 24% have four year Degrees and almost 20% have graduate Degrees.  The average per capita income is $36,215 (U.S. average $24,020) and the average household income is $70,352 (U.S. average 444,684).

 

The unemployment rate in Middlesex (4.10 percent) is lower than the U.S. average of 4.60% and recent job growth is positive (0.84%).  Projections place future job growth at 20.21%.  Sales tax in Middlesex is 5% and income taxes are 5.95%. 

 


The Middlesex County real estate market is currently showing signs of slowing.  The median cost of a single-family home in Middlesex County is $540,000 and home appreciation over the last year was -3.02%.  Sixty percent of homes in Middlesex County are owned and 37% of homes are rented, leaving only 3% of homes that are either vacant or for sale.  The current property tax rate is $12.02.
